Portable, affordable and available in a plethora of colors (9 to be exact), the Janome New Home sewing machine offers a lot of great features for a low price. This isn’t a commercial model that can be used 8 hours a day, every day of the week, but it is the perfect sewing machine for beginners or anyone that sews on occasion.
This model is also lightweight and comes with 10 stitch options.

Stylish, Fun Design
One of the lightest sewing machines we’ve ever tested, the New Home weighs just 5 pounds. It is extremely portable, yet it is designed to be durable and long-lasting. This model offers 9 color options:
- Marine Magic
Colors come in fun names, such as “Purple Thunder” and differing price ranges. The cheapest model is $60 (Graceful Gray), while the most expensive model is the Marine Magic, which costs $86.95. Most models hover around the $69.99 mark.
Note: While the colors and prices may vary, the main features and specifications remain the same.
Stitching Options and Adjustments
The number of stitches is just right with this model. With the 10 most-used stitches offered, you’ll be able to tackle beginner and advanced sewing projects with ease. Yes, there aren’t many decorative stitches available, but these are often left unused outside of quilting projects that demand a higher-end sewing machine.
You’ll find all of the basic stitches offered:
- Straight stitch
- Decorative (just one)
All of the stitches are shown to the right of the stitch dial selector, so users can see what stitches are available and what to set their stitch dial to when choosing.
When adjusting your stitches, you will find that there are 3 width options available if you need to make wider stitches. Length can be adjusted using the 5 length selections. This allows for all the adjustment options needed for 99% of sewing projects.
Bobbin Loading and Threading
Loading bobbins is simple and easy. The Janome New Home offers a top loading bobbin with a push-pull bobbin winder. This allows you to start sewing fast and wind up the thread quickly when you are done.
For a traveling sewing machine, the push-pull bobbin winder is very convenient.
Lots of Extras Included
The worst thing is buying a sewing machine and unpacking it before realizing you don’t have any bobbins or needles to start sewing. Janome includes a lot of extras to help you get your first sewing project underway, including:
- Needle threader
- 2 bobbins
- 2 needles
The needle threader is located in the tiny compartment on the front of the machine that is used for storage. I want to note that the needle sizes given are size 14, but the instruction manual states that you can use a size 12 needle if you prefer – it’s up to you.
- Small and lightweight; perfect for beginners and children
- Durable and affordable
- Comes with 10 stitch options and plenty of stitch adjustments
- Comes with everything you need to start sewing
I will be the first to admit that the Janome New Home sewing machine is quite noisy. There is no way to oil up the machine, so this is an issue with no real recourse – you have to deal with it. But, it’s not so noisy that it will hinder your sewing project by any means.
This model comes with a free-arm design that I almost forgot to mention. This allows you to hem your favorite pants with ease. There is also a reverse lever that allows you to sew a reverse stitch and lock in your seams with ease. It’s definitely a nice addition for a model in this price range to offer an easy way to create a reverse stitch.
Simple and easy to use, the New Home offers something for every user. It’s fun to use, easy to transport and comes with all of the basic features and options that beginner and advanced seamstresses will use on a daily basis.
